Interactive Program Guide for the 2001 IEEE MTT-S International Microwave Symposium
![]() I thought I would try my hand at writing a Palm OS application by writing an Interactive Program Guide for future IMS conferences that attendees can carry with them on their handy Palm, Handspring or Sony PDA using the Palm OS. So the 2001 Conference publicity material became a perfect candidate for this effort. Imagine having the technical program guide and exhibiter directories at a moment's notice! The 2001 MTT-S International Microwave Symposium is being held in Phoenix, AZ from May 20 through 25th at the Phoenix Convention Center. Material for this application was derived from the Advance Program and excellent Websites at http://www.ims2001.org/ , http://www.rfic2001.org/ , http://www.arftg.org/ . |
Click here to download the Zip archive, "IMS2001_Guide.zip". Unzip it into a temporary directory and install normally all the .pdb files onto you Palm device via the HotSync process. Install takes about 443K of memory. Click on TealInfo app and open folio "IMS 2001". Tap on it to start the program. |
|
In all, I spent about 40 hours on this
project, creating the UI screens and mostly to re-type or reformat the
material into the required format.
Navigation is straightforward. Each page is identified at the top left side. You tap onto buttons (usually rounded outlined with text inside). Near the top of the screen, there is always a 'Home" button which returns you to the front page, "IMS Program Guide". |
|
The "Tech Program" guide has a set of
expanding/collapsing triangles which you can use to select the session
that you want to find and see information. Once you select the session
name on the left, click on the underlined Hyperlink on the right to see a
detailed listing of that session's papers.
There are two pages for "IMS Tech Prog" and "IMS Workshops" After you are done with the popup window with the session description or listing, simply tap anywhere on the screen to return back to the underlying screen. |
|
Under the "Guest Info", there are two Buttons: one for summary of Planned Tours and one for Social Events. There is also an animated set of Arizona scenic images to entertain you.. |
|
Under the "Contact Info", there are three directories for each Steering Committee: IMS, RFIC and ARFTG. The MTT-S, RFIC, ARFTG and IEEE symobls are show on the in a scrolling fashion. |
|
If you click on one of the Steering Committee's Button, you would get a list of names, title, phone numbers and email address. You can also use Graffiti strokes to move the list to the starting letter of a name. For example, if you make the stroke for "N" under the IMS SC list, "Nair, Prabha" will be put the top of the screen and highlighted. You can then scroll right to see the phone number or email address. | ![]() |
The Exhibiter Info section is incomplete. If I had the Phoenix Civic Center exhibit area booth numbers, I can add it to the table. When you are in a text screen, you can use the vertical and horizontal sliders to navigate through the document. For most text screens, you can also use the UP/DOWN buttons for vertical paging and the "Addr/ToDo" buttons to scroll left and right. | ![]() |
At first, I thought about doing a Web clipping app for
wireless models (Palm VII or Palm V with Omnisky service) but most users
would not have wireless Internet access yet. Instead, the
interactive guide for 2001 IEEE MTT-S IMS Conference was written in
TealInfo, an easy to use rapid development tool from TealPoint Software.
If you find TealInfo useful, you can buy it online at http://www.tealpoint.com/ or at
PalmGear http://www.palmgear.com/
.
Please try out the IMS 2001 guide that I finished over the
weekend on your Palm-OS based PDA and provide feedback. To install, unzip
all contents of the IMS2001_guide.zip
into a temp directory and install via hot sync to your Palm OS PDA. If you
find any errors or suggestions, please email me at tt.lee@ieee.org I am looking forward to making further improvements with your suggestions. Enjoy ! Timothy Lee 03/19/2001 |
